Russia spamming my Google Analytics for Trump; BIGLY!

“Trump, good for Russia!” said one of the referrals on my analytics data for my website. What?!?! It was kind of strange to see in my data.

Starting about three or four months ago, I started seeing a lot of traffic from Russia on my Google Analytics tracking tools. I thought it was unusual but I didn’t think too much about it. I run a personal website for my job hunting purposes and a personal blog barely anyone reads. Why would Russia give a crap about my website. It always seemed weird and nagged a little in the back of my mind but I had more important things to do like find work. I was building a corporate website for a client which was taking a lot of time and the contract was ending soon so I needed to look for more work. Not enough time to worry about Russia and my little website.

Last week I started to really look at my analytics and noticed this in my data –
“Secret.ɢoogle.com You are invited! Enter only with this ticket URL. Copy it. Vote for Trump!,”

It was 31.14% of the referral traffic for Oct. 3rd through Nov. 27th (68.86% for the previous month). In fact, 29.58% of all sessions on my website for the same two month period (plus the previous month) originated from Russia. I’m pretty sure Russians don’t like me that much or I would’ve been married to a mail order bride by now 😉
So something else is going on.

Several strange referrer traffic things came up quite a bit on my analytics —

“Vitaly rules google ☆*:。゜゚・*ヽ(^ᴗ^)ノ*・゜゚。:*☆ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯(ಠ益ಠ)(ಥ‿ಥ)(ʘ‿ʘ)ლ(ಠ_ಠლ)( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ヽ(゚Д゚)ノʕ•̫͡•ʔᶘ ᵒᴥᵒᶅ(=^ ^=)oO”

______

“o-o-8-o-o.com search shell is much better than google!”

______

“Google officially recommends o-o-8-o-o.com search shell!”

______
Now I have to find a way to block all of this crap from my site. After things lately, I may block anything from Russia to my website on the server side. That wont stop everything as some some of the spamming (like supplements, diet pills, and penis enhancement products) are coming from other locations. That also wont stop people (bots) with VPN‘s (who could be anywhere) from trying to spam my site.

Another way to look at this though might be, “Yay! My site is popular now!” (Ok, not really)
Anyway… up too late tonight. Must sleep.
Thanks for reading,

  1. But Trump says the Russians didn’t do it, right? He knows everything, right?
Falling in love with BFF, Putin… Draining the swamp only to fill it with alligators… Repeal healthcare…
Off to a great start without him even being sworn in.
    Make America… err… something, again!

    1. Thanks James,
I have researched on how to stop the problem. As of yet, there doesn’t seem to be a real one-button-click fix for all of this. I have read that I can set up filters so that at least the fake hits don’t show up in my analytics data when I go to look at it but from what I have read it still screws with the stats for referral traffic and can be used to elevate the search results of spammer’s site in google searches. I think I am understanding this correctly. I am not sure if that affects my site in anyway. Might be just an inconvenience.
As far as the filters… I can filter whole blocks of IP addresses so that will have to work for now. Hopefully, I wont be blocking legit traffic by doing this.
